Fiscal multipliers in advanced and developing countries: Evidence from military spending

This paper provides new evidence on the effects of government spending output from a large panel advanced and developing countries. We identify shocks using variation in international military spending. estimate one-year fiscal multiplier, pooled across all countries sample, vicinity 0.8. The cumulative multiplier reaches its peak at 0.86 two years after shock. find substantial heterogeneity economic environments as well countries: multipliers are relatively (above one) economies, recessions, for negative shocks, under fixed exchange rate, closed economies. also analyze scenarios which identifying restrictions may not hold, highlighting possible limitations military-spending approach providing wider range effects.
